ABOUT APSA

UCSD APSA:

MISSION STATEMENT

We the students of University of California at San Diego, come together to provide a forum to deal with the problems and concerns of all UCSD Asian & Pacific-Islander (API) students especially those deemed "underrepresented" by the Student Affirmative Action Committee (SAAC); to create an environment where political, educational, cultural, and social issues can be address; to increase awareness about our API history and heritage within the University and the community; to unite as a community to represent a common voice thereby empowering ourselves; and to serve as a basis for building bonds and addressing differences between students.

WHAT IS RE:IDENTITY?

Due to the lack of representation of the API community in media, we want to provide a platform for people to showcase their own stories through music, art, fashion, spoken word, dance, etc. When someone performs or talks about their identity, their story -- they're challenging the societal portrayal of their identities through stereotypes. So as a platform, we are "responding" to the subject of identity by highlighting the complexity and diversity of different identities.

APSA BENEFIT TALENT SHOW

Since there is an under-representation of Asian and Pacific Islander (API) artists in mainstream media, APSA's Benefit Show provides students and community members a platform to showcase their own talent and to give themselves a voice through entertainment. This is especially significant for Asian Americas who wish to break negative stereotypes portrayed in the media, learn from successful role models, and to realize their potential to achieve their dreams despite the underlying political and social limitations within society.

This benefit show allows API artists and performers the opportunity to foster personal growth and development and to convey the depth and scope of API talent to the public. In addition, the show is a charitable event that will support various non-profit organizations through raffles, food and concessions, and donations from the community.
